Sony Ericsson releases Elm phone

Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson on Wednesday announced the launch of Elm phone and accessory Bluetooth noise shield handsfree VH700, adding to the company’s green products portfolio.

The mobile phone and accessory provides consumers with an expanded range of products to make an educated green environment without compromising on design and functionality, the company said on Wednesday.

Sony Ericsson also announced that the company would make all accessories green compliant by 2011.

The Elm phone can block background noise with the help of a noise shield, clear voice and volume adaptation.

“Keeping in line with the Communication Entertainment proposition, the phone offers an easy-to-use social networking experience featuring the Widget Manager application, which allows users access their social networking page” said Sony Ericsson Vice President-Marketing (Asia-Pacific) Peter Ang.

The company claimed that Elm phone and VH700 would benefit the environment and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The phone comes with recycled plastics, free from chemicals, a low power consumption charger and minimized packaging, the company said.

Lenovo’s Paddle-shaped Mini Wireless HTPC Keyboard

Lenovo has a tiny remote complete with trackball and media hotkeys that they quietly launched last week. This tiny qwerty keyboard is perfect for anyone who has mastered texting to any extent. The tiny but finger-friendly keys are perfect for surfing, youtube’ing or anything else that requires a small amount of typing. Just below the keyboard on the ping pong paddle shaped controller is a trackball crowned by left and right mouse buttons.

This is basically the love child of a the logitech diNovo mini and a wireless presenter remote. Rounding out the perfect controller is a nano USB dongle about the size of this micro-SD reader and AAA batteries. These are available right now on Lenovo’s web site for a very modest $60. Smooth and comfortable these should work well on any project systems you were thinking about creating. Turn over a new leaf this year and start working on those pet projects.

Sony eyes multi-core CPU for PS4

Just because Sony said that the PS3 would have a ten year life span, that doesn’t mean the company isn’t apparently moving forward with the PlayStation 4.

According to insider info (along with some speculation!), Japanese website PC Watch is reporting that Sony is looking to alternatives to the PS3’s Cell architecture, which some developers have found to be challenging. One early alternative include Cell and Intel’s Larrabee. Wanting a bit more horsepower, Sony has apparently abandoned this plan. Sony was also apparently considering a modified version of the Synergistic Processor Unit, but is now supposedly working on designs that include a mulit-core CPU.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all believed to be exploring new system architecture. And with the exception of a possible Wii HD, PC Watch Impress states that it takes 24 months to produce new consoles, making 2011 difficult for new hardware and 2012 or even as late as 2013 more possible.

However, PC Watch Impress notes that new handhelds will pre-date new home console hardware — so by that assumption, the PSP2 will be released before the PS4. Whatever they decide to do with the next PlayStation, Sony should never forget that their popular brand name has been built with the excellent software that has been available for their consoles.

Sony Will Consolidate International Distribution Operations

Sony Corp. said it will consolidate its international distribution operations with those of video games unit Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. this fiscal year to reduce overlapping costs.

The Tokyo-based company and the games unit, which sells PlayStation 3 software and hardware, will combine distribution routes and jointly bid for contracts to lower expenditures, spokeswoman Mami Imada said, confirming an earlier report by the Nikkei newspaper. Imada declined to give specific figures.

Steve Jobs gets $1 Annual Salary for 2009

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs will keep his $1 annual salary for the last year, while four other company executives were given $100,000 pay raises after they were determined to be underpaid.

Jobs, 54, has been paid a $1 annual salary since 1997 and did not receive any bonuses or stock awards in 2009 according to the company’s filing with the SEC on Wednesday.

Jobs currently owns 5.5 million shares of Apple and has yet to sell a single share in his 12-year tenure. Jobs has not received any new equity since 2003.

The year has not been smooth sailing for Jobs as he took a five and a half month leave of absence from the company due to a medical condition that required a liver transplant. At the time, some speculated that Jobs may have been terminally ill.

Shares of Apple were cut in half during 2008 when the company’s products did not fare well amid the economic meltdown. The stock rebounded in 2009 by nearly 42% and at the close of trading on Wednesday the shares were at $202.10. Based on this recent price, Jobs’ holdings are worth about $1.1 billion.

Job is also the largest individual shareholder of the Walt Disney Co. with a 7.4% stake valued at $4.5 billion.

Apple, Google are the best in Silicon Valley

If an unscientific week-long poll carried out on the Silicon Valley-San Jose Business Journal has anything to say about it, Apple and Google are the two most admired companies in Silicon Valley, and by a long margin at that.

In the end, Apple and Google garnered 35% and 22% of the poll’s votes, respectively, combining for a majority total of 57%–sheer tech world domination.

Cisco took third-place with 11%, followed by HP with 8%, Intel with 5%, and Oracle with 4%.

Of course, tech world veterans and novices alike could have easily guessed at who would win a competition of this sort.

Google’s popularity usually goes unstated. The usage of “google” as a verb for performing some Web search has been permanent now for so long, it’s become unremarkable. Likely, the company hopes it can spur the same kind of popularity for its other services–Google Apps, Google Chrome, Google Chrome OS–but we’ll be the deciders of that. Either way, no one can debate the significance of “Google Wave invites” trending on Twitter so often. Google’s innovations please people.

As for Apple, we need only look at the numbers. In addition to seeing three of the most profitable quarters in its history this year (a triply incredible feat considering the recession and CEO Steve Jobs’ absence for much of the year), Apple has cemented itself in the mobile market, with a report this week from Nielsen calling the iPhone the most popular phone in the country. The Cupertino-based company has seen such widespread popularity that the iPhone App Store’s succes has even been extended to third-party companies; for example, Tapulous, a Guitar Hero-like music gaming app, is reportedly making $1 million a month.

Only time will tell how long these kings of computing hold on to their precious thrones in this constantly-changing industry.
