Samsung on Wednesday donated $1 million to a United Way Capital Area’s Success By 6 program which supports care and education for low-income underprivileged children.

That is the biggest single donation to the United Way in several years. Samsung Electronics said it made the donation to celebrate plans to invest about $3.6 billion expanding one of its fabrication buildings, bringing its total spent in Austin to more than $9 billion since 1996. Samsung Austin has promised to increase employment to more than 1,600 by 2011, and has applied for about $3.75 million in state incentives.

The program initiative works to ensure Austin’s youngest and most vulnerable children are ready to learn and succeed by the time they enter kindergarten. The program funds efforts to improve child care centers that serve low-income children and work to teach parents ways to support educational enrichment.

Scientists at Rice University and HP researchers say that they can overcome a fundamental barrier to the continued rapid miniaturization of computer memory that has been the basis for the consumer electronics revolution.

In recent years the limits of physics and finance faced by chip makers had loomed so large that experts feared a slowdown in the pace of miniaturization that would act like a brake on the ability to pack ever more power into ever smaller devices like laptops, smartphones and digital cameras.

In one of the two new developments, Rice researchers are reporting in Nano Letters, a journal of the American Chemical Society, that they have succeeded in building reliable small digital switches – an essential part of computer memory – that could shrink to a significantly smaller scale than is possible using conventional methods. More important, the advance is based on silicon oxide, one of the basic building blocks of today’s chip industry, thus easing a move toward commercialization. The scientists said that PrivaTran, a Texas startup company, has made experimental chips using the technique that can store and retrieve information.

HP researchers are set to announce that it will enter into a commercial partnership with a major semiconductor company to produce a related technology that also has the potential of pushing computer data storage to astronomical densities in the next decade.

HP and the Rice researchers are making what are called memristors, or memory resistors, switches that retain information without a source of power.

Hillcrest Labs announces that LG is using the patented Freespace in-air pointing and motion control technology for its 3D Ready internet connected HDTV sets. The new license agreement will see future versions of the TVs get a remote control that works sort of like a mouse without needing a desk or surface to put it on.

The Magic Wand remote will be offered with certain LG TV models in the Infinia line of LED LCD TVs. The remote will allow the user to browse the internet applications, TV menus, embedded games and other screens of the TVs using hand controls and an onscreen cursor. The system is relatively accurate, compensates for Wii-like jittering and uses RF wireless to eliminate any need for a direct line of sight.

The remote will have six degree-of-freedom movement and a range of 30 feet from the set. Hillcrest has also announced that it has reached a global patent deal with Sony that will provide it with the same in-air pointing technology. The companies did not disclose a timetable for when they would ship the Magic Wand technology.

Samsung on Wednesday has confirmed plans to launch its first LTE-based 4G phone in US next month. The phone, known as Craft, distributed by MetroPCS, will use the LTE network only for data access, while the CDMA voice network will still be used for voice calls.

According to an earlier report, the Craft will cost $299.99 off-contract and sport a touchscreen display, full HTML browser, Bluetooth 2.1 and a Qualcomm CPU. It won’t be a smartphone and will instead use a simple custom OS with TouchWiz layered on top.

MetroPCS is expected to begin the rollout of its LTE network in Dallas/Fort Worth and Las Vegas first, with a complete rollout completing sometime in 2011.

Global mobile operators are tapping fourth-generation mobile services, which can transmit data as much as 10 times faster than the current third-generation services.

The federal lawsuit filed Monday accuses Sony Corp. of violating three patents owned by Chimei Innolux Corp. in the manufacturing of products including televisions, notebook computers and Cyber-shot digital cameras.

Chimei filed a similar federal lawsuit in Arkansas last month accusing Sony of violating three different patents.

The complaint was filed a month after Chimei filed a similar lawsuit against Sony in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas.

Chimei is seeking unspecified compensatory damages, which it wants tripled because of what it considers Sony’s “willful” misconduct, and other remedies.

HP is apparently working on a screen so wide that it would make that Philips super-wide 21:9 aspect ratio HDTV set look like a 19-inch tube TV.

While recently addressing the DisplaySearch Emerging Technologies conference, HP CTO Phil McKinney told the audience about a “triple-wide” HD display that the company is working on — one that can show an entire basketball court at the same time. McKinney described the view as comparable to having the “Jack Nicholson seat,” the front row mid-court spot that the actor has long had at Los Angeles Lakers games.

The tech giant is also working on gesture- or voice-based control for such a screen. To get the panoramic effect the screen requires, the source video would need to be stitched together from the footage of multiple cameras shooting slightly different areas of the same space. McKinney says HP is working with the NBA on the concept, though there’s no further word on when this would be available, at what size, and with what technical requirements. But I’m sure they’d be plenty of eager viewers if a demonstration ever gets scheduled. (Read more on VentureBeat)
